Need a replacement car key? A locksmith or a dealership may be able to help. Before choosing, find out who can handle your vehicle, what the full price includes, and when the key will be ready.
Ask both providers to quote the same work. A price for the key alone can leave out cutting, programming, and testing.
Here are the questions to ask before booking service in Little Rock.
Explain what is wrong with the key
Be clear about the problem when requesting estimates:
- You have a working key and want a spare.
- Every key is missing.
- The vehicle starts, but the remote buttons do not work.
- You need a replacement that supports particular functions, such as passive entry or trunk release.
Tell the provider which functions you need and ask whether they are included in the quote. A key that starts the car may not include every remote function.

When to call an automotive locksmith
Call an automotive locksmith to ask about a spare or replacement key. If the car cannot be driven, ask whether mobile service is available for your vehicle and location.
Give the locksmith your vehicle year, make, and model, and say whether you still have a working key. A provider who can duplicate your key may not be able to make one when every key is lost.
Before arranging a mobile visit, confirm that the technician can do the work at your location and has the required parts. Mention any access problems in advance.

When to contact the dealership
Contact the dealership if a locksmith cannot service your vehicle, if you want a manufacturer-branded key, or if you have questions about the replacement procedure in your owner’s manual.
Do not assume the dealership can finish the work immediately. Ask whether the key must be ordered, whether the vehicle needs to be present, and when programming can be scheduled.
If you have a service plan or other coverage, check with the provider before paying for a replacement. Ask whether the work is covered and whether you need approval first.
What does the full price include?
Request an itemized estimate from each provider. Use the same checklist for both:
| Ask about | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Replacement key or fob | Which part is included, and is it manufacturer-branded or an alternative? |
| Physical cutting | Is cutting included, including an emergency insert if applicable? |
| Electronic setup | Which programming steps and functions are included? |
| Service location | Are there mobile-service charges or transport costs to consider? |
| Additional work | Could access, diagnosis, or other procedures change the estimate? |
| Final total | What taxes or other charges apply, and what could change the quoted amount? |
| Follow-up support | What written parts-and-labor terms apply if a problem develops? |
If the quotes differ, check the parts and work listed on each. Ask about anything missing before deciding based on price.
If every key is missing, confirm how many replacement keys the procedure requires. Our guide explains why some all-keys-lost jobs require two keys, with Ford and Mazda manufacturer sources.
When will the key be ready?
Ask when you can expect to have a working key, not just how long programming takes:
“When will the key be ready, with all the functions we discussed tested?”
The wait may include ordering a part, getting an appointment, and bringing the vehicle in.
Ask whether the part is in stock and whether the appointment is confirmed. Check with both providers before assuming one will be faster.
Ask what happens to the missing key
If a key is missing, ask whether it can still be used after the replacement is made.
Ask which electronic functions of the missing key can be disabled on your vehicle. Also ask whether its metal blade could still open a door and whether any separate lock work is needed.
Before you book
Before choosing a provider, confirm:
- Support for your exact vehicle and key situation.
- The replacement part and functions included.
- The estimated total and circumstances that could change it.
- Where the work will happen and when it can be completed.
- The identification and ownership or authorization documents required.
- What will be tested before the job is considered finished.
Some questions may require a vehicle inspection. Ask what can be confirmed by phone and what needs to be checked in person.
